SCFL Division One match, Saturday 5th October

Another game that has been below the required standard, and that’s on me; after all, I pick the side.

CHUFC 2 - 3 BILLINGSHURST
Goals: Boe Fowler & Archie Morgan

We started slowly and handed the initiative to our opponents and as always that sets the tempo and pattern of the game and makes it difficult to turn around. Our slow start was punished with the concession of a goal that again I thought we could have dealt with which right now reinforces that we let goals in so easily. I don’t think it’s the shape of the side otherwise I would have changed it by now so if it's not that, it’s the players themselves that have to be accountable. I also questioned on Saturday the team's desire and just how much each player is prepared to invest through the week and on matchdays in giving everything to win games consistently. It genuinely felt that the players look upon it as something they enjoy doing on a Saturday.

We did improve in the first half and I was happy that we did get more crosses into the box but we didn’t have players in there to finish. When we had the ball in the top third in central areas we made wrong choices and I was disappointed given that Billingshurst who are now third in the league could have been beaten if we had just a small improvement.

The second half started well. An equaliser from a well-taken free kick from Archie should have been the platform to grab the game and go on to win. We conceded again when Billingshurst entered our half for only the second time in the half and after about 15 minutes when our defending can only be described as shocking.

We were still dominating possession and playing nearly all of the game in our opponent's half and got a second equaliser with still 25 minutes to play. I thought it was our game for the taking but another quite awful bit of defending gifted the visitors the lead for the third time and this time there was no way back. We lacked leadership across the pitch although Jake was tireless in driving the team on and I need to address the failings to rescue the season. Hugely disappointing again and not for the first time there were a lot of regrets and the feeling that this was another missed opportunity. I make us now at least 10 points light on where we should have been and I need a reaction and for this to change and quickly.

The same issues are resurfacing time and again and perhaps our lack of experience is now costly. Big decisions for some of the players as to how they are going to step up and big decisions for me in what team to pick next time.
