FIRST TEAM MANAGER ON THE STORRINGTON GAME

FIRST TEAM MANAGER ON THE STORRINGTON GAME

Tracy Dale3 Dec - 16:49

Match played on Saturday 30th November at Chalky Lane

CHUFC 4 - 3 Storrington
Goals: Kai Neil-Gray, Asher Maliki, Tobe Uzor x 2

I was obviously delighted that we extended our winning run to 6 games overall and 5 in the league, but the performance itself was, for the most part, below par.

On what was a difficult surface, Storrington adapted better and executed their own game plan very well, being happy to allow their midfield to join the attack in numbers and being honest enough out of possession to work hard to get back behind the ball. As is so often the case that approach brings its rewards and they deservedly went in front at the midpoint of the half. Our response was quick as our equaliser from Kai Neil-Gray came just a few minutes after and whilst the finish had a huge slice of good fortune I hoped that getting level would be the platform for us to get to grips with the game.

I was disappointed that the nature of the game didn’t change and our concession of the second goal direct from a corner right on half time summed up our performance. During the break, we spoke about the character that we had shown recently and how this game wasn’t going to be decided by quality but by belief and hard work and those words seemed to have been lost on the players as we conceded again on the hour mark. With what had gone before I couldn’t really see a way back but a goal will always have some effect and Asher Maliki's fine finish with 15 minutes to go kick started the best part of the game. We were now playing almost entirely in our attacking third and when Tobe Uzor scored again just a few minutes later, it was definitely ours to win.

It was pleasing that the substitutes were impacting the game at a time when Storrington was tiring and unable to change things and the pressure finally paid off with another late winner with Tobe Uzor scoring his second goal of the match. In the end, we got the win which our last 30 minutes of play probably merited but we hadn't been at our best.

What is hugely impressive at the moment is the character of the side who, because of the run that they are on, believe that they can get something from every game. Momentum is a huge part for any side and we have that at the moment and need to keep it going for as long as possible as we attempt to get into the playoff positions.
