CHUFC 2 - 1 Selsey FC
Goals: Kai Neil-Gray, Bobby Bennett
Our opening to the game was the best it's been in some time, playing on the front foot and with a huge territorial advantage we hardly gave Selsey a kick and it was pleasing that what we had asked of the players was being put into practice.
So often recently the players have chosen their own approach but with the simple instruction to put the ball in the box and to get the ball forward at the first opportunity we created a tempo to the game that our opponents struggled with. On a number of occasions we came close from a series of corners and the biggest concern was that we hadn’t made the most of our period of domination.
The game did change on 25 minutes when we harshly had a player sin-binned giving Selsey their first real moments in the game. They didn’t really hurt us though and when we were back to full strength we took hold of the game again.
At the break we asked for more of the same but as so often happens in football the second half brings a change in momentum and Selsey was the better team in the first 15 minutes of the half scoring once and having a second chalked off for offside after a delay in reaching that decision that took as long as a decision referred to VAR.
Whether it was that moment that reignited our game, I'm not sure, but our equalising goal came at just the right time, as if we had gone on much longer, we might have lost belief. As it was, and with a feeling that we did not deserve to be behind in the game in the first place, we took control again and went ahead with 20 minutes still to play.
Not getting a third meant we still had to see out what could have been a nervous ending, but our management of the final minutes and stoppage time was good, and we scored an all-important three points. With 2 more home league games to follow, I'm hopeful we can get more points on the board and climb the table.
