GAFFER ON THE DORKING WIN

GAFFER ON THE DORKING WIN

Tracy Dale4 Apr - 09:00

Played Tuesday 1st April

CHUFC 1 - 0 DORKING WANDERERS B
Goal: Tobe Uzor

It's all getting very tight at the top, and because of that, there is pressure on everyone to deliver in every game. I felt the group did very well to earn a narrow win over a good Dorking Wanderers B team.

From my point of view, I thought we were in the ascendancy in the first half, and after taking the lead midway through with a well-finished penalty from Tobe, we created and missed a number of half-chances where we should have done better. Most of those came from set piece deliveries and I thought we lacked enough desire to get on the end of things or to be first to the loose ball in the box. I'm sure others may have felt it was just good defending, but my view was that we weren’t committed enough in those moments.

We had reached the break without our own goal coming under threat but I had seen enough from Dorking to remind the players at the break that they were a capable team who had a goal in them if we didn’t stick to the job in hand.

I thought it was a similar pattern in the second half, but a shape change from the visitors gave them a bit more of the ball further up the pitch, and we had to be aware of that, which I thought we handled quite well. Whilst their change gave them a bit more going forward it opened things up for us a bit more and we had 2 or 3 very presentable chances this time from open play that we failed to convert. All of this made for the usual late-game nerves, but to be fair to the lads, they didn’t have a legitimate shot on our goal all night, and we were rarely troubled.

The only criticism was that we hadn’t made the game safe by increasing our lead, but we managed the game overall very well and your not always given exactly what you want or a comfortable ride.

Another game chalked off that I think we deserved to win, but as I say, it's all about opinions and others may have seen it differently. What was most pleasing is that we are finding a way at the moment to win differently, and that stands us in good stead. It's straight on to the next one now, and another 90 minutes of being put through the ringer.
